Step‑by‑step troubleshooting
1. Google account needed for "Make a copy"
Problem: The "Make a copy" button does nothing.
Solution: You need a Google account. Create one at accounts.google.com. After signing in, the "Make a copy" link will open the template in your Google Drive.
2. Opening .xlsx in Excel
Problem: Excel says "file is corrupted" or won’t open.
Solution:
- Download the .xlsx file and save it.
- In Excel, open File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file and open.
- If Excel warns about unsafe content, click Enable Content.
3. Enabling macros
Problem: Macros don’t work in Excel.
Solution:
- After opening the .xlsx, go to File > Options > Trust Center.
- Select Trust Center Settings > Macro Settings.
- Choose Enable all macros and click OK.
- Excel may ask if you trust the source — click Enable Content.
4. Access rights
Problem: You see "Access denied" or "File not found".
Solution:
- For Google Sheets: Ensure you have edit rights to the file (you own it after "Make a copy").
- For Excel: The file is on your computer, so no access issues.
5. Network or browser issues
Problem: The download button shows "404 Not Found" or nothing happens.
Solution:
- Refresh the page (F5).
- Clear browser cache (Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data).
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
- Disable ad blockers temporarily.
6. File size or compatibility
Problem: The .xlsx file is too large or incompatible.
Solution:
- Each template is under 1 MB. If you get a size warning, try again.
- Excel 2016 and newer support the format. Older versions may not.
7. Missing project attribution
Problem: After editing, the Gridly attribution is removed.
Solution:
- The attribution is a comment line in the source code. It can be removed, but we recommend keeping it.
- To restore, add
# Gridly — https://stats.matlahoff.ruto any sheet.
